Filmul tratează tema obsedantă a momentului, ruptura drastică între generaţii. Tatăl parcurge distanţa între Germania în România doar pentru a echilibra viaţa fără sens a fiicei sale. Cum se spune, face totul pentru ea. Discret sau intruziv, o urmăreşte pas cu pas în viaţa sa corporatistă din România. Drog, eşec sentimental, tranzacţii eşuate, partyuri trăznite, toate îl au drept martor „din umbră” pe tatăl care îi spune fetei sale că viaţa merită trăită şi trebuie trăită altfel. Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield („Hacksaw Ridge”), Ryan Gosling, Viggo Mortensen („Captain Fantastic”) şi Denzel Washington („Fences”) au fost nominalizaţi marţi la premiul Oscar pentru cel mai bun rol masculin.
